Five strangers on five small errands walk into the same unnatural mist, and five family keepsakes come alive and drag them to the foot of a staircase that has no business existing. At the top: a tall, narrow house whose door opens by itself, whose fire dies the moment the last guest steps inside, and whose walls bleed a verse about a hungry beast beneath the floorboards. The finery is a lie, the taxidermy is watching, the house is arming them — and in a hidden study, a dead man’s will and a letter signed “In darkness I endure” say the word Barovia for the first time.
