Eighteen guards, one street, and eight feet of Izek: “The baron wants to see youse.” The audience comes with festival floats, a Baroness who never stops grinning, wax-sealed writs of deputyship, a commission against Lady Wachter — and a price collected at the door, when a very large hand lands on Fëanor’s shoulder. Sirius goes up to meet the Baron’s perfect son and comes down owning five of thirty-five minutes. The coffin maker’s shutters hide six things Sirius can count through the ceiling, and Henrik breaks in a side alley for the gentlest reason: somebody finally told him the truth first. Then the barman stops pretending — a second impossible letter, a squirrelly landlady, and a wereraven unfolding in the party’s own bedroom with seven hundred years of context and one piece of free advice. A note goes to Wachterhaus in Lily’s hood; “Have you turned on me, Lily?”; sleep falls twice and twice fails to stick. And at half past seven the lady throws a party — fifty delighted citizens as masonry — and delivers the verdict over canapés: “Your services are no longer required.” The party withdraws to count heads in the dark, and comes up one short.
