Through a crumbling gate stamped with the sigil of the Strahd empire — the same sigil on Osric’s family banner — the party walks down into a village where curtains twitch and strangers mean trouble. An old woman sells pies that are far too good and answers no questions about them; a new-made burgomaster explains, patiently, that the vampire is real and there is no leaving; and his sister Ireena needs an escort west, because the devil has been courting her and it killed their father. Then a funeral, a weeping priest, a chained trapdoor — and down in the crypt, a frightened voice: “I’m sorry. I’m so hungry.”
