The windmill fight ends the way fights with three hags end: a paladin and a knight turned into frogs, a gnome sprinting into the middle of it to pocket them both, and a beloved invention smashed to scrap — and take your toy, too. The party runs; the hags laugh; nobody chases. Then, by firelight, the woman from the silver net tells them what the pies are made of, and everyone is quietly very glad they burned the lot. The road west offers a dire wolf with roses in its mouth and a letter signed your destined future lover; the same raven that watched them in the village turns out not to be an animal at all; and at dusk on the last day the party reaches Vallaki — real walls, mandatory smiles, a festival in seven days, a church with an empty secret under its altar, and, at a corner table of the warmest inn in Barovia, a very old man who has seen people like them before. All of them. Once.
