Under the house the crypts are all empty, the mother’s coffin boils with insects, and Gustav Durst hangs from the rafters of an underground bedroom with a note still in his hand. Deeper down, a chant rises — “He is ancient. He is the land” — past thirteen alcoves of unsettling relics, to an altar over black water where robed apparitions demand what altars always demand: one must die. The party looks at the dog, looks at each other, and says no. What midnight sends up out of the refuse instead, and the crystal heart Osric’s blade finds at the centre of it, close the book on Death House — and three freed spirits finally say the devil’s name out loud: Strahd.
