Who: Priest of the Village of Barovia’s church; keeper of the Morning Lord’s light there.

Where: The village church, at his altar.

Status: Alive. Praying — his son is not.

First met: Session 4, at the old burgomaster’s funeral.

What we know

  • Met us dishevelled and hollow-eyed at the altar, but he buried the old burgomaster with us, and wept at Fëanor’s small light-miracle.
  • His son Doru was taken by the devil, and came back wrong. Donavich kept him chained beneath the church, begging travellers to help — and made us swear, over and over, not to kill him.
  • In the end he came down and heard his son with his own ears — what Strahd did to him, what the hunger had made of him. He turned his face away and gave the only answer left: “Do what you must.” Then he fled up the stairs.
  • We left him on his knees before his altar, praying like a man drowning. Drew told him the truth: “I think you both made the right choice.” Sirius knelt and prayed beside him until it was clear he needed to be alone with his god.

Open questions

  • What does a priest do in Barovia, now, with an empty crypt and an empty house? We owe him a visit if the road ever brings us back.
