The Festival Flyer
Handed over at Vallaki's east gate. No date on it, children required, and a new law that had not yet made it to the printers: failure to attend is punishable by punishment.
We got it at Vallaki's east gate on our first evening, after the forms, the list of laws and the registration of every weapon we owned, down to a broom handle and each individual crossbow bolt. Guard 4368 had one more thing for us, "a new law that unfortunately had not made it to the flyers":
"We have a festival coming up, the Festival of the Blazing Sun. Attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend this festival is punishable by punishment. Here, have a flyer."
The flyer itself named the festival, made attendance mandatory and required children to attend, if you have them. It had no date on it. The guard told us it was seven days from that day, and that all would be well. Walking in, we passed people tearing down the last festival's posters and pasting up new ones just like ours. Somebody said the town must have one poster maker. Somebody else said pikes would be provided.
The festival did not wait seven days. After the night of the vampires the Baron moved it up, a crier announced it for the next day at noon, "Bring your sick, bring your grieving. All will be well," and the Baron did not live to see the end of it.
