38 people and powers
Cast of Characters
Everyone we've met in Barovia: friends, foes, the dead and the undecided.
Barovia is a small country, and it remembers everyone. These are the people we have met since the mist took us: the ones who helped us, the ones who lied to us, the ones we buried, and the one who owns the place. Each page holds what we saw and heard for ourselves, in the words people actually used. Where we are guessing, we say so.
Factions:
Death House
-
The Durst Household †
Dead
The family of Death House: a mother who ran a cult, a father who hanged himself, a baby taken below, and a maid who didn't know she was dead.
-
Rose & Thorn †
Dead Friendly
Rosavalda and Thornboldt Durst, the two children locked in the attic of Death House. We carried their bones out and buried them somewhere nice.
Village of Barovia
-
Lancelot
AliveAlly
A very thin, very good hound we found starving under a harpsichord in Death House, refused to sacrifice, and walked home to Mary.
-
Bildrath
AliveNeutral
The village shopkeeper, who priced us as a hazard until Sirius talked him down to a quarter. He paid us in coins with the devil's face on them.
-
Doru †
Dead Neutral
The priest's son, taken by the devil and sent home a vampire. He wanted to stop and was forbidden to let us stop him.
- Father Donavich AliveFriendly The village priest who made us promise not to kill his son, then heard the boy out and said, 'Do what you must.'
-
Ismark
AliveAlly
The new burgomaster of the village of Barovia: honest about the devil, less honest about the crypt. 'You will learn not to trust people in Barovia.'
- Mary AliveFriendly Lancelot's owner and Gertruda's mother. We gave her back her dog and would not promise her daughter. She heard a promise anyway.
Tser Pool Encampment
- The Man in the Tent AliveFriendly The big Vistani man at Tser Pool who called all five of us by name before we had given them, and poured Sirius a drink.
-
Madam Eva
AliveFriendly
The old seer of Tser Pool. She knew our names before we gave them, read our fates for free, and called Sirius an imbecile. Twice.
The Windmill
-
Granny the Pie-Seller
AliveHostile
The sweet old woman with the too-good pies turned out to be Morgantha, a hag with two sisters and a windmill. We fought them and lost, and we have sworn to go back.
- Vasha and Radu AliveFriendly The werewolf in the silver net and the mate still chained in the hags' mill. The pies were made of them. We gave our word we would come back.
Vallaki
-
Ireena Kolyanovich
AliveAlly
The burgomaster's daughter we promised to keep safe, whom the devil calls his love, and who is now, because we said her name in a square, the sworn burgomistress of Vallaki and our employer.
-
Danika Martikov
AliveFriendly
Our landlady at the Blue Water, whose family owns the winery that keeps all Barovia afloat. She winced when we talked about the dead raven-man.
-
Father Lucian
AliveAlly
The priest of St. Andral's: gentle, far too trusting, braver than he lets on, and the only man in Vallaki who told the whole town the truth about the vampires.
- Roger AliveFriendly The last survivor of the Mistwalkers who came before us, forty-five years ago. He told us how his story ended so that ours might not.
-
The Bard ("Riptarvo")
AliveFriendly
The moustachioed minstrel of the Blue Water, who says the devil's name out loud, knows old stories about stolen power, and left us a vampire-hunting kit the night before we needed it.
-
Urwin Martikov
AliveAlly
Our landlord at the Blue Water: innkeeper, husband, father, and a wereraven of the Ravens of Barovia. He showed us in our own bedroom.
- Yeska AliveFriendly Father Lucian's eight-year-old altar boy and chosen successor, who does twenty push-ups a day, once told a secret he shouldn't have, and is going to get wings.
- Headmistress Claudia AliveAlly The stern, exhausted headmistress holding twenty orphans together with no funds. We started badly and ended on the same side.
- Milivoj AliveFriendly The orphanage's kind giant of a groundskeeper: cursed victim, confessed bone thief, and the man who sold a church's protection to pay for a search party. He would do it again.
- Mostly Felix AliveFriendly The small boy in the padlocked attic, and the shadow demon that answered when we asked his name. The demon is in a locket now. Felix is just Felix.
-
The House of Wachter
AliveWary
Lady Fiona Wachter fed Vallaki's poor, kept her husband's body in her bed and a fiend on her shoulder, and was trampled by the crowd after she surrendered. Her sons live. Her manservant is missing.
- Ernst Larnak MissingHostile Lady Wachter's manservant: the hands that took the bones from Henrik, a survivor of the Reformation Center, and now a man with nobody left to serve and every reason to hate us.
- The Ravens of Barovia AliveAlly Wereravens who have been quietly working against the devil for centuries. Our landlord is one. They watched us from the day we arrived, and they'd like us to prove ourselves.
- Henrik the Coffin Maker AliveFriendly Vallaki's coffin maker. He passed the stolen bones to Ernst, was paid in six coffins he was told never to open, and went to the Reformation Center for it. We found him in the silent cells and brought him out.
- Izek AliveAlly The Baron's captain, with a demon's arm, who said 'Hold' in the square, was turned against us by the twins' words, came back, and killed the sister himself. Now he serves the office, and the office is Ireena.
-
The Baron of Vallaki †
Dead Hostile
Vargas Vallakovich, Baron and Burgomaster of Vallaki: mandatory festivals, wax-sealed writs and our priest held as surety. He meant every word, and he died on his own stage.
- Victor Vallakovich MissingHostile The Baron's perfect son, who studied in the attic, took memories out of people's heads, and wrote down what he did to Stella before he vanished.
-
Muriel Vinshaw
AliveAlly
Wereraven, married into the Martikovs, the Ravens' self-described active part. She watched us from the village of Barovia onwards, fought beside us for two days, and then very sensibly quit.
- Stella Wachter AliveFriendly The girl behind the moaning door. Victor Vallakovich broke her mind on purpose, and wrote it down. We are looking for someone who can mend it.
- Ilimir and Ivalice † Dead Hostile The elven twins, brother and sister, who ran the Reformation Center and called it cleaning people's heads. They fought with words and tea, and both died for it.
- Udo Lukovich AliveFriendly The man we found in manacles in the Baron's house. The Baron had picked him out of the Reformation Center's intake to take his temper out on. We let him go.
- Blinsky AliveFriendly Vallaki's toymaker, in the happiest shop in Barovia. Every toy is a Blinsky original, some of them used to explode, and he owes us two dolls.
- Bluto AliveWary Vallaki's town drunk and the Wachter brothers' drinking friend. We were asked to find him, and we found him on the haunted lake, throwing a girl in a sack over the side of his boat.
