Received in Session 10 · from The Baron of Vallaki
The Baron's Writ
Written out by the Baron himself, one each, and sealed in wax. Flash it and your orders will be followed. The man who wrote it is dead.
Izek and eighteen guards walked us to the Baron's back office, where the Baron accused us of performing an exorcism in his town without asking and then offered us a job: prove that Lady Wachter consorts with the devil. We accepted. "Do we get badges?" "No badges, unfortunately." He had to fetch the paper himself, because two of his three staff had disappeared over the last couple of weeks, and he scribbled one of these for each of us and pressed his seal into a blob of wax at the bottom. "Flash this writ to anyone and… your orders will be followed." And: "My word is law." Then he kept Fëanor as surety.
It worked. The bowyer next to the Coffin Works asked "Am I of service?" and told us everything he could think of. A guard on his rounds checked it and left us alone, so Lily picked Henrik's lock in broad daylight, and when Henrik came storming to the door we told him we were on business and walked in. Later, when we were running from Wachterhaus with the bones, a guard called Dominic trotted off to fetch Izek for us on the strength of it. Ernst Larnak put it best: "There's only one devil in Barovia, and you are flashing his writ."
The Baron is dead. What his writ is worth under Ireena, nobody has asked.
I am acting under the request of the Baron. Follow my orders.
