Drew was on her way to fix the clock of the old lady at the end of her street when the mist came down, and she arrived at the foot of the impossible stairs reading the air pressure off her six-faced chronometer. Her verdict on being stolen out of the world was "Terrifying and exciting", and it still is. She treats Barovia the way she treats everything: as a mystery that needs solving, and a pile of parts that could be made into something better.
She is the one who makes sure we all promised not to be the one who brought us here. She is our appraiser, our forensic scientist and our security system, and more than once she has been our conscience.
From Julkem
A village tinkerer from a family of farmers. She worked in an artisan's shop building cannons against wolf attacks, security systems and prosthetic limbs. At home she lives in her own annex off her parents' house, fitted with security measures ("Don't open my door without me being there"), and she has tried to get planning permission for a secret room. She forges in a leaning shed outside and does the fine work indoors in lens goggles, and she once set fire to two fences. "And now we have Clover. It was worth those fences. And the sheep were fine after. The wool grew back."
Formulas are tattooed up both her arms, among them the terminal velocity of a sparrow, and one that's there "just because I really like chickens". Ireena listened to her explain every one. She likes Barovian tea, which tastes like the water she cleans her tools in: "It reminds me of home." She is around thirty.
The amber
An amber shard on a chain on her goggles, with runes inside it that move if you look closely. It has never been translated. Family lore says it holds a secret it will one day answer. Her own gloss: "Apparently unlocks secrets and all sorts, but that could've just been Nana. Nana did like a drink."
It pulled her through the mist, holding a steady bearing while her compass lost north. Since then it has done nothing at all. It is the one heirloom among the five that has never stirred in Barovia, and Drew has noticed.
The cards have spoken about it, though. At Tser Pool she drew the Necromancer and then the Raven:
"Oh. A secret sealed in amber stone. Your blood has carried the question for generations." "The Raven, the messenger. It purveys the message sealed in amber deep in the mountains. But mark me, child, knowledge there is bought, and bought dearly."
The table's verdict on the Raven: so on point, it follows you in all dimensions. We also remember that one of the thirteen relics in the Death House reliquary was a lump of amber resin. Nobody knows what to make of that yet. See The Reading.
Clover
Her combat laser ordnance vehicle for emergency enemy removal, or CLOVER for short. She'd drawn blueprint after blueprint of it, and in the middle of a wolf ambush on the road to Tser Pool it finally clicked: she spun a tool out of her pocket and a little robot formed out of the parts. Its first act was to burn a wolf to a crisp, and the rest of the pack ran. "Those were the bad vibes. Does anyone need good vibes?" The good vibes turned out to be real: Clover can wrap everyone near it in protection. "It's very cute for something that just burnt a wolf to death."
- It changes modes by swapping gems, in a very cartoonish fashion: a flamethrower, a force ballista that knocks things back, and the protective pulse.
- Morgantha smashed it at the windmill with two swipes: "And take your toy, too." It flopped over like a cartoon. It was back in action at the orphanage.
- Since the vampire night it rides on Drew's shoulder like an Iron Man turret. Its protection caught a woman who jumped from a third-storey window of a burning house, and took the blow when the burning church dropped rubble on Izek.
- It lasts about an hour. She can call one up for free once a day, and spend a spell slot for another, which she did in the corridor of the Reformation Center.
In Barovia
- Death House. She ran the trust pact, appraised everything, and made a club out of a broom and a healer's kit out of linen. "It's what I do. I make stuff." She crouched to the ghost children's height, packed Rose and Thorn's bones with a doll and a toy soldier, and promised Rose "I will bury you somewhere nice." She carried them, and the maid's, on her belt until we did. On the gift: "I'd rather sacrifice a baby than the dog."
- Doru. She would not raise a hand to him. She held the crypt hatch shut and shouted for us all to leave him, and she told his father afterwards: "I'm not a religious person, and I'm not going to pretend I know what you're going through, but I think you both made the right choice."
- The road. Her first Shield stopped a wolf's teeth a hair from her skin. She shot a silver bolt into a zombie as a controlled experiment and noted that silver made no difference, then harvested the corpses and kept a jar of zombie guts. (Drew insists.)
- The orphanage. She opened the locket "for the lols". Then she read the danger before anyone else, slipped away mid-monologue to get Milivoj tied down, and was possessed for it. The demon made her run, and she looked back at Sirius: "I'm sorry." Freed, she handed over the locket, screamed twenty children out into the garden, and brought Clover back.
- Henrik's nails. She pocketed the nails from the Vallakovich crypt, charmed the Workyard smith with talk of hammers, and got a name: "Oh, you've got Henrik's nails." She broke Henrik by doing what she does best, which is levelling with people. Her alarm spell on our room is the only reason we ever caught the Ravens delivering.
- Overnight she made a bag of holding and a silvered shortsword, the sword mainly "because it would make me feel better". (The DM: "It seems a bit OP, but if that's what you want.")
- The burning town. She closed a man's torn throat with a healing spell, talked a woman off a burning third storey ("Jump, it's gonna really hurt, but you won't die and I can heal you. Jump."), and put a natural-20 fire bolt through a vampire spawn in the church. In the fight she made a show of giving Clover's protection to Izek, so he'd see who was helping him.
- Wachterhaus. She proved the cellar pentagram was set dressing. She told Ireena everything at last, and it was that honesty that got us the bones. "Why didn't you tell me before?" Then she smashed a window, barricaded the door with a desk, jumped, and realised she'd left someone behind. "Now I feel like an asshole."
- The festival. A natural 20 on the Wachter sons turned them against their mother in public, which saved their lives. Afterwards she comforted them and promised them wine, and care for their sister.
What Barovia has done to her
It made her magic work. Her tinkering "finally cracked" here: bedrolls and candles at first, now a gun ("I get a gun"). It took her cannon apart once and she built it back. It has left her amber silent. And it has made her the person who tells people the truth, which in Barovia turns out to be rarer than magic.
She can charm people. She doesn't like to: "it feels really deceitful."
In her own words
"Feel like I'm not in Julkem anymore."
"That's grease, buddy."
"If we make it out of here, I'm going to have a little chat with you, young lady, about how you know such information." (To Lily. The chat is still pending.)
"You didn't prepare us for this." (To Father Donavich, holding the crypt hatch.)
"You get a beet. You get a beet."
Sirius, who defers to her: "You're smarter than me, Drew. I will follow your lead."
